'Hygeia' Artwork by Gustav Klimt

About the Artwork

Famed Austrian mural artist, Gustav Klimt, created ‘Hygeia’ in 1907 for the University of Vienna. He was commissioned to create three paintings to decorate the ceiling of the university’s “Great Hall”. The pieces came to be known as “The Faculty Paintings”. The work consisted of three themes: Philosophy, Medicine, and Jurisprudence, with ‘Hygeia’ (daughter of the god of medicine) representing the medical field.

It was to be Gustav Klimt’s last public commission.

About the Artist

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was an Austrian Symbolist painter, known for his striking, decorative style that blended realism with ornate patterns. A key figure in the Vienna Secession movement, his works explored themes of love, death, and sensuality. Klimt's most famous piece, The Kiss, showcases his signature use of gold leaf, intricate detailing, and bold, emotive imagery. His art celebrated the beauty of the human form, especially the feminine.
